Mangrove Fishing Tour - Experience Cartagena’s Local Culture
Do you know how to catch crabs or maneuver a fishing net? Discover an authentic eco-tourism experience just outside of Cartagena’s walled city and join us for a Mangrove Fishing Tour in La Boquilla, a vibrant community of native fishermen with a rich and delightful culture. This tour is perfect for those who enjoy connecting with local people and immersing themselves in their way of life.
Your adventure begins with a 20-minute journey to La Boquilla. Far from the colonial and modern architecture you’ve seen in Cartagena, we’ll arrive in a modest neighborhood characterized by dirt roads, small houses, and an atmosphere of incomparable friendliness and joy. Upon arrival, you’ll meet a local guide who will explain the significance of our visit and the role of eco-tourism in supporting the community of La Boquilla.
Once we’re ready, we’ll hop into a canoe and start our journey through the Juan Polo swamp, navigating through the lush mangroves. As we travel, our guide and local fisherman will teach us about the unique mangrove ecosystem and its importance to the local environment. The fishing adventure begins as we check the traps for catching jaibas (a type of crab) and learn how to use traditional fishing nets to catch our lunch.
Afterward, we’ll head to the home of the fishermen, where their family will welcome us with a warm meal. Our catch of the day will be prepared in a wood oven, accompanied by rice, fried plantains, and salad—a typical and delicious Cartagena lunch.
Join us on this Mangrove Fishing Tour with the native people of Cartagena. It’s a unique experience that offers a glimpse into another side of this charming and diverse city.
